Tom Faranda's Folly

My thoughts on life, death, love, and money. Not necessarily in that order. This journal was started on September 8, 2005.

Name:
Location: Croton on Hudson, New York, United States

Who is Tom Faranda and why is he keeping a web-based journal? To answer the second question, I've just started chemotherapy for lymphoma which will go on for months. Likely to have some downtime when I can work on a journal. It may also be easier to keep in touch with people, rather than by email. Who is TF? Well I am a FORMER - altar boy - math and science teacher - expatriate (Jamaica, Cayman Islands) - rugby player (20 years) - rugby coach (12 years) - scuba diver (could resume!) - Jesuit-educated (Fairfield BS, Fordham MS) - civil disobedience maven (could resume that one, too) - beer drinker - I am a CURRENT - husband (Brigid) - father (Joe and Tim) - financial advisor (CLU, ChFC) - pro-life, consistent ethic of life activist - Roman Catholic - always interested in the confluence of science, religion, and philosophy - addicted to reading - wine drinker –

First Post

This web journal was named and begun on Sept. 8th on another weblog service, and today I decided to move the fledgling operation over to blogspot or blogger.com, which is owned by Goggle. The estimate is that there are almost 17 million weblogs out there, and Goggle is hosting 8 million of them.

This is supposed to be easy, and I'm sure that eventually it will be, but it took me over ninety minutes to just get this far - journal description, my profile, some basic settings.

This afternoon, over brunch, my 12 year old son Joe said he was considering taking the name Eudoxius as his confirmation name. While Fr. Mike was discussing the impending Church capital campaign at the homily, Joe had read about Eudoxius in the Magnificat daily devotional book I'd brought to Mass. Eudoxius - not exactly a common name. But it evidently used to be common - the Eudoxius Joe is interested in is here Catholic Online - Saints & Angels - St. Eudoxius , not the Eudoxius Bishop of Antioch or the Arian Eudoxius.

Joseph Edward Eudoxuis Faranda. Hmmm.

Not bad. How you can misspell google and nail Euxodius half a dozen times confirms that we are related.

Hi Tom,
You probably don't remember me, but you will remember my wife, Dawn, or Joy, Vickery. Laurie Hurley gave me this address for your blog so I will be checking in occasionally to read about your !@#$%^! Yankees. We will pray for extermination of the cancer cells, and the Yanks too.

Of course I remember you. I think you and Dawn have eight children now? Dawn drove out to Wichita barefoot. How could I forget her?
